Beaded Row Extensions: 4 Foundation Mistakes

Four foundation mistakes I see on beaded rows, and what they do to the client.

In this video

  • 0:00  Beads too close to the scalp or too tight
  • 0:16  Enough hair in each bead, even spacing
  • 0:33  Keep baby hairs out of your beads
  • 0:44  Take your time on the foundation

Beads too close to the scalp or clamped too tightly

Too close or too tight and she feels it. That tension is the most common complaint after a beaded row.

Not enough hair in each bead

Each bead holds up part of the weft. Skimp on the hair in it and that little section carries more weight than it should.

Gaps between beads

A gap means the beads either side of it take extra load. Keep the spacing even all the way along.

Baby hairs caught in the beads

Short baby hairs caught in a bead get tugged every time she moves. Leave them out.

Take your time on the foundation

Everything sits on the row. Slow down here and the rest of the install goes better.

Video transcript

The foundation is arguably one of the most important parts of a beaded row install and small mistakes here can lead to some pretty big issues. First, if your beads are placed too close to the scalp or clamped too tightly, you can create unnecessary tension which can lead to discomfort for your client. Next, you need to make sure you're picking up enough hair in each bead. If you don't have enough hair supporting each bead, the weight of the wefts can put too much stress on those sections of natural hair. Spacing is just as important. If you leave gaps between your beads, you can create uneven weight distribution across the row. And finally, watch those baby hairs. If you're clamping short, delicate hairs into your beads where they shouldn't be, they can get pulled on and cause irritation and discomfort for the client. Your foundation is what supports the entire install, so taking your time and getting these details right is essential. If you're a stylist who wants to learn how to properly install beaded rows from start to finish, I've created an online certification course that walks you through the entire process. You'll learn the techniques, the details, and the reasoning behind what makes a great install. You can find the link to sign up in the description below.

Common questions

Why do beaded row extensions feel tight or uncomfortable?

Usually the beads are too close to the scalp or clamped too tight. Baby hairs caught in a bead are the other culprit.

How much hair should go in each bead of a beaded row?

Enough to carry its share of the weft. Too little and that section of her own hair takes the strain.

Does bead spacing matter in a beaded row install?

Yes. A gap loads the beads on either side of it unevenly, so keep them evenly spaced.
